Art of Winning Office Politics

The art of battling office politics is nicely covered in site content http://www.officepolitics.com/promo_hr/promo_hr_index.html. This is an excellent site with a lot of content to handle Office Politics.  I sometimes used to shutdown when things started getting worse due to politics. But I think some of the things mentioned in this site are just awesome and reinforces my thought process. I will try to follow most of the things mentioned in the website and have already added to my favorites. A simple sentence “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything” is so nice and meaningful that I captured from “Give more than you get” page

Sometimes in past I have been unable to understand the hidden relationships in an organization, people with different surnames but still married together due to work or some other bond. I will try to understand the six degrees of separation in an office environment. It is very true that “it’s often not what you know, but who you know” is important. The world is changing now and so is the work culture. That concept of a worker working for 50 years with same organization is no more. More and more people are now switching jobs or doing consulting, which is not just for money but it gives a different kick out of your job but there is still a small section of employees who are really devoted to a single organization.

I will also advice to develop more patience and virtue taking the honorable road in Office disputes. I sometimes used to forget this. “Approach office conflicts as a decision matrix. Don’t think farther ahead in your responses than is justified by your knowledge of the situation. Have the patience to wait out responses from others in your communications with them and keep an open mind to the possibility of their change of attitude towards the situation. This requires a great deal of self-control” I will definitely try to use this in my day to day dealings with people. Being a consultant I follow it usually but sometimes I used to forget. Other traits that I really liked and recommend for handling such scenarios are – being proactive, separation of politics from social activities, email communication, give visibility to your superiors and top boss in your organization, don’t complain but be heard, being flexible and most important thing of all develop solid emotional competence.

I will not play politics ever but I will ‘win it’ using some of things mentioned in the site content on a regular basis.

Politics is for Politicians and not for Organizations but when individual goals comes infront of the organizational goals-Politics comes into play due to selfish nature of an individual. Organizations cannot skip from Office Politics so let us embrace it gracefully and come up with a solution to handle it gracefully and WIN it.
