`If reborn, I want to work for AIIMS again`
The eminent surgeon, who had been locked in a bitter turf war with Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss, specially since the 2006 anti-reservation agitation in AIIMS, was ousted in November 2007. He was reinstated as Director by the Supreme Court on May 8 after passing a legislation in the Parliament fixing the age of the AIIMS head at 65 years.
HC refuses to extend Venugopal`s tenure
Dr Venugopal is something of a medical prodigy. He has donned the hat of a keen researcher, besides excelling in his chosen field — cardio-thoracic surgery. To him goes the credit of having performed India’s first heart transplant as far back as in 1994. Since then, he has been associated with over 50,000 open-heart surgeries.
